2005 WKA US Amateur National Championships
Features 3 New Amateur Divisions:
“Novice” Kickboxing.Amateur MMA.Submission Grappling

Coming off of the success of the 2004 WKA US Amateur National Championships, the WKA USA (World Kickboxing Association’s US affiliate) is proud to announce the addition of 3 new Divisions that will change the face of amateur combat sports tournaments in the USA. The WKA has hosted the largest adult Kickboxing Championships in the country for the last 4 years. The success and popularity of such hard core combat sports as Muay Thai and MMA are hard to ignore. Many of the potential participants have expressed their interest in competing in these events, but at a level where they could get some experience without having to worry about being mismatched in the later rounds of the tournament. Currently there is no way to guarantee that a first time fighter will not have to match up with the reigning National champion past the first round, and this prospect can be daunting. The idea of having “novice” Kickboxing divisions (Full Contact, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai) that would let fighters with no more than 5 amateur fights compete against each other has become a reality. The competitors of this division will compete against opponents of similar skill level to become the WKA US Novice National Tournament Champion. Competitors in the “open” Kickboxing divisions (Full Contact, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai) will still vie for the WKA US Title Belt and a place on the US Team, qualifying them for a trip to the WKA World Championships.

In addition to “novice” Kickboxing divisions, the WKA USA’s MMA division will host the first ever amateur Mixed Martial Arts National Championships and amateur Submission Grappling National Championships. The WKA USA has sanctioned MMA and Submission grappling for the past 2 years and the popularity and appeal of the sport cannot be denied. As with the Muay Thai Division, the sport can be intimidating to enter for the first time competitor. The MMA division will be a one 5-minute round match with full submissions and limited ground striking, and will have the fighters wearing shin guards and MMA gloves that have heavier padding, similar to that of a boxing glove. The Submission Grappling division will deviate from the norm by rewarding competitors who attempt to submit their opponent rather than stalling. Athletes can view the WKA MMA rules on the WKA website www.WKAUSA.com.

This first time ever event is scheduled for mid-June and will take place over three days just outside of our nation’s Capitol. More updates will follow. Please visit us at www.wkausa.com. If you would like more information on any and all of these great divisions please contact the WKA USA by e-mail at WKAUSAREP@aol.com.
