the doors open for MMA in Galveston County

GALVESTON, TX, July 21, 2012 – Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition has officially arrived to Galveston as of Saturday, July 20th with the Superior Combative Championships holding the very-first sanctioned show to take place on the island.

A consortium between several longtime Galveston County-based business owners catering to the martial arts community, Superior Combative Championships (SCC) was created with the expressed goal of cultivating the growing sport of MMA in the area beginning at the grass roots amateur level.

Last night’s Battle of the Bay 1 event put on by SCC at the Galveston Island Convention Center marked the first step towards a permanent place for Mixed Martial Arts on the island.

All in all eight amateur bouts were contested with representatives from several local schools, including: Al Garza’s Premier Martial Arts, Spar MMA, ATA, Martinez Martial Arts, and more.

Many of the night’s combatants would make their first foray into the MMA cage with plenty coming from a more traditional martial arts background. As is such, Battle of the Bay represented their first chance to get a feel for MMA competition and perhaps motivate some to keep working with the goal of one day following fellow islanders like Legacy fighters Justin Reiswerg and Ryan Hollis who’ve begun to make waves on the statewide scene.

In the end it was a spirited night of fights.

Out of the eight fights on the night, only three made it to the judges’ scorecards.

Some of the highlights on the night included TDC correctional officer Corey Richards coming down from Huntsville to win by TKO over Casey Malik in an entertaining albeit quick-ending brawl.

Likewise, both Sean Mc Ferren and Kevin Lieb both did well in coming back from getting out-positioned early to score submission wins over Rudy Alvaro Jr. and Paul Earls respectively.

Last but not least, Jeremy “Nightmare” Hardy scored the last win of the evening in the main event with a second round TKO over Eric Martinez.

Definitely a great start for MMA on the island and a good opportunity for the guys mentioned above and the rest to gain some experience.

With their first event now behind them, look for Superior Combative Championships (SCC)  to do even better next time around as they’re tentatively scheduled to return with their second event on November 9th.

Below are quick results from Battle of the Bay 1 along with a photo gallery slideshow from the event.
