Largely unknown to Texas fans, Alfonso Gonzales looks to make a splash in his Legacy FC title debut
HOUSTON, TX, June 11, 2014 – Looking ahead to this Friday’s Legacy Fighting Championship 31 one of the least known fighters on the card is also in the most prominent position of main event challenger. Hailing from Tacoma, WA, Alfonso Gonzales (6-0) took the middleweight title fight against champion Bubba Bush on short notice. He replaced Roger Narvaez who went on to sign with the UFC and he’s also looking to do the same thing. Credentials-wise he has what it takes to get there should he get past the current champion. Likewise he’s also hoping to capitalize on the big market exposure Legacy FC can offer him and get his name out there to the casual fans. Those fans may not know much about him yet but after Friday night, he’s hoping that all changes.
“I started (combat sports) with BJJ and won some tournaments,” says Alfonso about his start. He moved on to MMA shortly thereafter and has been doing it ever since. It’s been over three years since his first fight. He posted a 6-1 record as an amateur and is currently 6-0 as a pro. Overall his winning streak totals up to an impressive 9 fights in a row. That totals up to someone who could pose a formidable threat to the Bryan-College Station based Bubba Bush.
“I’ve been non-stop training and I’m very excited for this fight. It’s a big challenge and I want to test myself and see where I stand. My teammates and coaches that I have surrounded myself with are great and the cross training I have been doing is good preparation. Seeing different looks has be very helpful too.”
His fight vs. Bush at Legacy FC 31 will mark his third bout of 2014 and third in as many months. Some folks may look at that schedule as a detriment but Alfonso feels it gives him the advantage.
“It’s been very helpful (the constant activity. I’ve been non-stop training and I feel very prepared since we haven’t taken a break from training. I am healthy and feeling good. As for Bubba, I know he’s the champion and I know he’s a very strong wrestler I don’t watch tape of any of my opponents, I let my coaches do that. But I do feel I have the advantage in this fight with conditioning and my standup. After I win this fight and the title I feel the sky is the limit whether it’s defending the belt with Legacy or a call from the UFC.”
