TXMMA – Texas Mixed Martial Arts

An Early Look at Nov 5th Legacy Fighting Championships

It’s Houston vs. the World on November 5th as Brazilian Black Belt and UFC-veteran Junior Assuncao (10-4) travels to the Lone Star State to take on H-Town’s Brian Melancon (4-1) in the main event of the upcoming Legacy Fighting Championships, set to take place at the Arena Theatre.

The main event super fight will feature Houston’s Brian Melancon (Paradigm) taking on Recife, Brazil native Junior Assuncao (Head Instructor at Ascension Mixed Martial Arts) of Atlanta, GA.

Coming off a four fight win-streak on the Southeastern US regional circuit, Junior Assuncao is looking to use this trip to Houston, and Melancon, as a springboard back into the major leagues. Similarly, the Paradigm-based fighter has other ideas for the visiting Brazilian as he looks to add another rather large notch on his belt en route to even bigger fights. Having recently dispatched of Dream and WEC veteran Todd Moore, another win in this Legacy FC main event could pave the way for Brian Melancon to land a multi-fight contract with a national organization himself.

For the former powerlifter and UTMB grad, winning this bout could be an important benchmark for  his MMA career and he’s treating it as such. In fact, Brian recently took some time off from his full-time role as a physical therapist to concentrate on training for his upcoming scrap with Capoeira and BJJ expert Junior Assuncao.

Recently on Mike Jackson’s Fighters Talk show, Brian had the following to say about his upcoming fight, “When I got into it, it was like, I want to fight the best people I can and climb the ladder as fast as I can and you know, everyone has one dream essentially and that’s to get into the UFC. Give me the fights that I can get to get there and that’s what I want. Those are the fights I want to take.” (see full video interview here after the jump)

The rest of the card for Legacy Fighting Championships is literally stacked top-to-bottom with some of the most highly-touted fighters from around the Houston area. Besides the Melancon vs. Assuncao main event, two titles are on the line as Rey Trujillo of Bushi Ban meets Ray Blodget of Elite MMA for the lightweight title along with Jonathan Harrris of Submission Boxing taking on Mike Bronzoulis of Paradigm for the welterweight strap vacated by former champ, Levi Forrest. Other notable fights on the card incude Akira Smith vs. Angel Huerta in what is sure to be an exciting stand-up war as well as the professional debuts of several highly-touted amateur fighters in Drew Raticheck, Alex Black, and Jon Malbrough.
