Bellator’s first PPV offering a mixed bag of results; Lots of questions yet to be answered

10320522_10152704397769879_3508995843100640110_nMay 19, 2014 – Bellator 120: “Rampage vs. King Mo” happened this past Saturday as the first PPV event in the promotion’s history. The show featured former UFC stars Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Tito Ortiz. It hoped to deliver an ending to some drawn-out hype but instead in creating much more to talk about.

First off, the main event between Rampage and King Mo was a long time coming. The two were jawing back and forth since way back in 2009 and finally got to step into the cage to settle things. The fight itself looked much one would expect it would. Jackson looked more dangerous on the feet and Mo won the wrestling battle. At the end of the day it came down to a close decision won by Rampage. King Mo was irate following the fight, even accusing promoter Bjorn Rebney of being a d— rider on nationwide TV. That beef has since been “squashed” but now both fighters at demanding a rematch. Lost in all this is current Bellator light heavyweight champion Emmanuel Newton. He’s slated to take on the winner of this fight (Jackson) but now fans will have to wait and see what’s in store next.

As for Tito Ortiz, he lives to fight another day following his win over Alexander Shlemenko. The fight itself was somewhat anticlimactic. Tito won by arm triangle in round one after gaining the takedown and a brief feeling out period on the feet. The size difference between the two was clear and distinct here. So clear in fact that it’s hard to call this an impressive victory or anything like that. Nonetheless he gets the win and plans on completing the 3 remaining fights on his contract. The question now is, against who? Is Joe Warren also ready to step up in weight to face the Huntington Beach Bad Boy?

Also notable at Bellator 120 was the shocking performance of Will Brooks. The perception by many was that he was nothing more than a late-replacement stand-in for Michael Chandler. Nobody thought he would earn the interim Bellator lightweight title but that’s exactly what he did after three rounds of action. This muddles up Bellator’s best laid plans of pitting Chandler against Eddie Alvarez for the third time. Brooks has seemingly earned that shot but now Rebney is saying that Alvarez can decline to face him in favor of fighting Michael Chandler again. It doesn’t seem fair but apparently this was all stipulated in his contract.

More on this as it comes.

For now, check out the complete results from Bellator 120 below.
