Professor Ulpiano Malachias is a second-degree black belt under Carlinhos Gracie and the head instructor at Gracie Barra Westchase in Houston, TX. Malachias is an avid competitor that has placed in high-level competitions throughout the world, including a bronze medal at World Nogi in 2008. Though now focused on instruction, Malachias still likes to lead his students by example and most recently competed at this year’s IBJJF Houston Open where he took gold in the black belt master division as a heavyweight. When not representing the GB banner himself Prof. Ulpiano can be seen alongside Vinicius Draculinho Magalhaes and other GB stalwarts coaching their team’s vast stable of athletes in tournaments throughout the state of Texas.

In this TXMMA Technique of the Week, Malachias shows our readers his fresh perspective on jiu-jitsu by demonstrating a slick arm lock from the turtle position. This submission can be executed with or without relying on the gi by replacing the deep collar control for a seatbelt (over/ underhook) grip. The key to setting up this submission is isolating the arm being attacked once top control has been established on the turtled opponent. To trap and leave the targeted arm defenseless use your knee to block the opponent from grabbing at their own leg to block by sliding yourself forward and to the side. Trap the isolated arm by grabbing it and triangling it with your legs and threaten with a lapel choke to set up the submission. When the opponent attempts to protect their neck they will leave an opening for you to roll them into position by controlling their head with your far arm in a half-nelson position. The natural movement of the body will roll your opponent in a way that will allow for you to also isolate the other arm with your own and leaving the arm trapped with your legs ready for attack. Hyperextend the arm by controlling your opponent and placing pressure on their elbow. Put your weight on the joint by sitting and squeezing your legs as you pull back and wait for the tap.

This time, we go to Austin and visit with Paragon BJJ’s Darrin Lillian, a black belt instructor who’s been training and competing since December 1996.

“There are so many reasons why I love BJJ,” Darrin says about this sport. “I think BJJ is limitless,” he says. “I have been training for so long and I still feel like I have so much to learn. I enjoy competition because it gives me a different feel than training in the gym. I learn something every time I compete, win or lose. All of it is important.”

Moving forward, Darrin said that participating in BJJ has enhanced his life in so many ways – from eating right and exercising more to intangible benefits that help him with the challenges of life off the mats, he credits the martial art with putting him at ease and clearing his mind.

“At Paragon Austin we have a great team of students and instructors. We train hard, but also have an atmosphere that makes the gym comfortable and welcoming to all of the gym members, from beginners to the experienced students. We try to create a culture of sharing information and team building. Everyone is valued and can contribute towards the team.”

Before we get to his technique video with Derrick Garza, Darrin wanted to share this piece of advice for beginners or those considering taking up BJJ.

“The main thing is don’t give up. There are going to be times when you are going to be in bad positions and feel like tapping from the pressure, or you may have had a hard day at work and just don’t feel like going to the gym and you have to just keep it up. The sport of BJJ can and should have a positive impact on people’s days and lives. The reward for all of the hard work and dedication that guys and girls put in far outweigh the difficult times that are experienced early on.”

For more from Darrin Lillian, please visit the Paragon BJJ Austin on the web or check him out in person at 6800 Westgate Blvd, Suite 116, Austin, TX 78745.

We’re also always looking forward to sharing more knowledge to the community. If you’re an instructor or experienced practitioner interested in providing your own technique of the week, hit us up on Facebook.

Well TXMMA.com certainly appreciates all of our readers and we count each and every one of you as family so we wanted to do something special this year.

This morning, several fighters from the Houston area converged at 4OZ Fight Club for a little turkey day rolling. In a funny coincidence, this group included several fighters (and one TXMMA.com writer) that were all allegedly “at the grocery store.” Nonetheless, space was made for much eating later on today.

As part of this session, Zion MMA owner and instructor to many Renan Chavez took a moment to demonstrate a special Turkey Day edition of the TXMMA Technique of the Week along with 4OZ Fighter and Legacy Fighting Championship 145/155 champion Daniel “The Pit” Pineda.

In the following vignette, Daniel and Renan demonstrate the sequence in which Pineda was able to secure victory and defend his belt against WEC veteran Frank Gomez at Legacy Fighting Championship 7 on HDNet.

HOUSTON, TX, October 24, 2011 – When I was first invited by Leonardo Xavier to stop by his grand opening during the seminar put on by Rickson Gracie, I must admit I was eager to observe the longtime family champion of the revered Gracie family and try to catch a glimpse of this aura of his that’s been validated by top black belts from all around the world.

The son of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie, Rickson was born into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has spent his entire lifetime championing the art and gaining international acclaim as one of the world’s top freestyle fighters while competing in no-holds-barred tournaments during the infancy of the sport we now call Mixed Martial Arts, ending his career in the genre without ever having been defeated.

Now 52 years old and an 8th degree black and red belt in the art his family created, Rickson spends much of his valuable time giving seminars and developing BJJ as his father saw it – as a tool for empowerment that gives the physically-weak individual a chance against the strong; a medium and a means to gain confidence and enrich ones’ life.

With an impetus on developing a greater understanding of his BJJ philosophy, here’s what we gathered from observing and briefly speaking to the master.

Rickson Gracie and the Concept of Invisible Jiu-Jitsu

Just as suspected, Rickson didn’t spend his limited time teaching the latest and greatest innovative guard techniques or expounding the virtues of the flying toehold at his seminar. Instead, his focus was on sharing the essence of jiu-jitsu as he’s learned how to see it through a lifelong love affair with an art he was born into.

Based on what we gathered from observing a portion of the affair and speaking to attendees afterwards, this seminar wasn’t about learning moves as it was about understanding the mechanics and feel of the most basic ones.

Less new technique, more understanding. That’s what this occasion was geared toward.

Invisible Jiu-Jitsu, as Rickson described it to those in attendance, is the “profound aspect to connect yourself and be stronger from your feet to your hands” in order to achieve efficiency. It’s feeling the connection between movements and not just initiating them. It’s also a principle that applies in both Jiu-Jitsu and everyday life.

“Every time you struggle, you’ll figure out where you’re not connected and be able to develop yourself with smooth movements. It’s that invisible force that you can continue to gain understanding of. That’s my motivation today – to understand Invisible Jiu-Jitsu, what is there besides what you don’t see.”

According to the master, it’s the understanding of this concept that keeps one efficient even when they’re tired, even when out of shape or gassed. It’s this principle that will help an athlete, an executive, a woman, or child use Jiu-Jitsu to protect themselves against a larger attacker. That’s the spirit of Jiu-Jitsu as he sees it – as it was originally intended – not just meant for competition but for life in general so we call learn more about ourselves and discover our possibilities.

According to Rickson, it’s a philosophy he’s gone full circle in understanding all while he continues to learn.

“I get all this love and everything and now my mission is to bring it back,” he says. “In my life I was passionate, gifted, a perfectionist, and I always listened to my dad but I continue to understand this feeling and develop that knowledge (about Jiu-Jitsu even now). I had to take my own fears and learn now to connect this force.”

“I’m bigger than my own flag,” the revered master says about how he feels nowadays. “Jiu-Jitsu is still always my motivation but it’s not about competing or defending the flag. I realized my motivation isn’t just competing or creating competitors but to bring back this invisible force. Now my flag isn’t just Humaita or Rickson Gracie… It’s Jiu-Jitsu.”

A Brief Q&A with Rickson Gracie

TXMMA's Mike Calimbas & Rickson Gracie

TXMMA.com : What is the general meaning of Jiu-Jitsu as you believe it to be? How do relate that to how it’s been adapted in MMA?

Rickson Gracie: I think the evolutionary process of Jiu-Jitsu brought a lot of attention and efficiency in competition to the sport of MMA… I feel like this proved that Jiu-Jitsu is efficient but much more than that is the philosophical aspect and self-defense aspect which provides a good peaceful state of mind for the practitioner. It’s not exactly just about being a competitor but having the knowledge to feel safe against an attacker. Jiu-Jitsu has a much more complete spectrum of service than competition and MMA. I emphasize the need of everyone to learn Jiu-Jitsu to develop more their sense of safety and internal peace. I feel like more attention on self-defense and a focus for women and kids is important and that’s exactly what Leo (Xavier) has been doing. That’s the kind of emphasis that needs to be spread out with more intensity.

TXMMA.com: What’s the main benefit that comes with someone dedicating themselves to training Jiu-Jitsu?

Rickson Gracie: It’s not about learning something you can only express outwards. I feel like by learning Jiu-Jitsu you will be able to learn more about yourself. By interacting with Jiu-Jitsu you start to develop a great sense of self. You’ll understand if you’re too tense or too timid or too passive. Then you can start to develop those elements to become sharper mentally and physically to keep you going forward in a progress which you feel like without Jiu-Jitsu it will be hard for you to go to your limits and your deep sensations. With Jiu-Jitsu, you can start dealing with very stressful situations but in a controlled environment with a very positive element so you can get tired, deal with problems, and resolve those problems. You go home more peaceful and more confident. Jiu-Jitsu works for anyone whether it’s an executive, engineer, police officer, athlete, woman, child, anyone. This is a very good community and activity.

TXMMA.com: It’s a pleasure to see a man of your esteem visiting us here in Texas and supporting Professor Xavier. When do you plan on being back?

Rickson Gracie: I hope to come here as often as I can. Of course I have a tight schedule but it’s always a pressure to support Leo in terms of what he’s doing here. I feel like he’s doing an outstanding job and it’s a matter of time for him to have more schools and become more involved in the community to provide a good service. A guy like that is not exactly one you find in trees.

This time around we feature UFC star and “Filipino Wrecking Machine” Mark Muñoz of Team Reign. Mark was recently in Houston, TX for the UFC Expo and to teach an MMA and wrestling-focused seminar at Paradigm Training Center alongside Reed Shelger and another UFC fighter in Jake Ellenberger.

Just to highlight some of Mark Muñoz’s accomplishments, not only is he one of top contenders in the world at 185, he’s also a two-time NCAA All-American wrestling for John Smith at Oklahoma State University and a longtime-coach of wrestling at all levels in his native California.

As for Ellenberger, he too is a top fighter having recently knocked out Jake Shields and also has a lengthy wrestling background as an assistant wrestling coach for the University of Nebraska at Omaha, an NCAA Division II National Champion school.

See the videos below as these UFC fighters demonstrate a few wrestling tidbits that apply to mixed martial arts. Afterwards, check out the album on the TXMMA Facebook Page for a ton of photos from the seminar.

BAYTOWN, TX, September 26, 2011 – The TXMMA Technique of the Week is back! This week we go to Elite MMA Baytown, home of Texas black and brown belt competitors Frost Murphy, Jordan Rivas, Robert Yamashita, and Julian Vega!

In this segment, Robert Yamashita demonstrates how to attack with a helicopter armbar from open guard while providing detailed verbal instruction on how to do the move. Immediately after that, Jordan Rivas shows how to properly attack a triangle from closed guard. The video is set to music but you can still properly see the setup of the technique, proving once again that teaching isn’t just about verbal cues!

Note: Consistent Texas tournament circuit competitor Julian Vega appears in both videos. As you can see, he’s sporting a new belt. Congratulations from TXMMA.com on your new brown belt Julian. It’s well-deserved and we look forward to seeing you rock it in competition SOON!

Don’t forget to Bookmark the Techniques Section on the site for all past and future TXMMA Technique of the Week demonstrations!
