The 2013 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship is taking place very soon with action tipping off at the Walter Pyramid in California State University (Long Beach, CA) on Wednesday, May 29th until Sunday, June 2nd.

The IBJJF Mundials tournament is universally recognized as the most prestigious GI tournament in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With that being said, it’s natural that plenty of grapplers from all around the world make the pilgrimage to the new mecca of BJJ year after year to try and win that coveted gold medal.

The Texas BJJ Community should be sending a sizable contingent of athletes to complete at this year’s 2013 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship event.

Texas-based black belts already registered to compete include: Sue Ausman (Travis Lutter), Bruno Bastos (Nova Uniao), Ulpiano Malachias (GB Westchase), Diego Gamonal Nogueira (BTT), Travis Tooke (Team Tooke), Marcus Antelante (Soul Fighters)< Carlos Diego Ferreira (Team Ferreira), Chris Westfall (Lutter), Jason Soliz (TX3C), Luis Rubalcava (Alliance), and Brandon Mullins (GB Texas).

Of course plenty of Texas grapplers from other ranks will be heading out to the Los Angeles area as well in search for a 2013 World Championship. That includes past international medal winners like Andy Cordova, Justin Rebolloso, Pedro Migliano, and many more.

All in all it should be a great showing for the lone star state and of course we’ll be there to cover it all for our readers.

Here are some shots from last year as a precursor to the event courtesy of Mike Calimbas Photography.

DALLAS, TX, May 10, 2013 – The 2013 IBJJF Dallas International Open went down at TWU’s Kitty Magee Arena in Denton last Sunday and the prevailing opinion is that the tournament was a great success topping their 2012 effort.

To expound on that, IBJJF tournaments are always well-run and organized but grapplers seem to think the talent pool this year at most levels divisionally was much deeper making for plenty of competitive matchups at all levels. It would have been even deeper but the 2013 IBJJF Dallas International Open registration actually reached capacity a day earlier than anticipated so plenty of grapplers missed out on the chance to showcase their skills in Dallas.

Hint: Register early next time.

As for the overall team standings for the 2013 IBJJF Dallas International Open, it comes to no surprise that Nova União won by a comfortable margin at this tournament. The Bruno Bastos-led team boasts a strong presence in DFW with schools like Alvarez BJJ, Team Lutter, and several others all competing under the same banner.

Highlighting their performance individually were blue belts Horlando Monteiro and Jordan Shepler who claimed double gold in the adult and masters divisions respectively. Meanwhile at the higher ranks, team rep Arnold Monterroso took first in his purple light feather division while Abu Dhabi World Pro Absolute Champion Kaue Damasceno added to his accolades with a gold in the brown heavyweight division as well.

2013 IBJJF Dallas Open – Overall Team Standings

1 – Nova União – 243

2 – Gracie Barra – 198

3 – KG BJJ – 127

As for additional individual highlights in the black belt divisions, there are several worth noting:

► Gabriel Vella (Street Sports) won a close and thrilling absolute final over Roberto Cyborg Abreu (Fight Sports) in the men’s adult final while Mackenzie Dern (Gracie Humaita) did the same on the women’s side over Fabiana Borges (Gracie Barra).

► Meanwhile in divisional action, Carlos Diego Ferreira (Team Ferreira) won a stacked middleweight division with Albert Hughes (Fight Sports) and Marcus Antelante (Soul Fighters) coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The opposition in that one also included guys like Leonardo Iturralde (Alliance), Jake Mackenzie (GFTeam), and others so props to all the Texas-based guys for holding down the fort in this one.

► GFTeam’s Ítalo Lins and Denilson Pimenta closed out the feather division while Marra Senki reps Gustavo Carpio and Sergio Marra ran unopposed at light feather. Last but not least was Roberto Abreu winning at Ultra-Heavy over Luis Rubalcava and Gabriel Garcia to close out the action at faixa preta.

MAY 4, 2013 – Noted pro boxer Ricardo Mayorga made his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut last night in his native country of Nicaragua at the at Omega MMA: “Battle of the Americas” at the Pharaohs Casino, Managua.

Despite a pre-fight scuffle with his opponent at weigh-ins caused by the 39-year-old missing the planned lightweight limit by an incredulous twenty pound margin, his bout against Canadian transplant Wesley Tiffer went off without a hitch.

Ricardo Mayorga entered this new sport after having compiled a record of 29-8-1 with 23 knockouts in boxing. He last fought back in March 2011, dropping a loss to Miguel Cotto, but has held titles in the 147 and 154 divisions over the course of his 11-year boxing career.

This Saturday, April 27th will be a full day in two cities with an event happening both in Austin and in Houston.

For Austin – American Grappling Federation will be coming to town for the very first time with the promotion hosting the 2013 Austin Classic at Farley Middle School in Hutto, TX. The event (AGF’s first-ever in Austin) will feature the $1,000 Team Challenge with additional prizes being awarded by sponsor Wartribe Fight Gear. Early registration has ended but you can still sign up here if you’d like to compete in the ATX.

For Houston – Amy Gonzalez’s new promotion Grappling Games will be hosting their very first event ever the University of St. Thomas Jeraback Center (the same site as the annual IBJJF Houston Open). The 2013 Grappling Games is boasting over $10,000 in cash prizes across a score of different divisions for this one. Early registration is until Wednesday and grapplers wishing to compete can sign up here.

The following weekend will mark a big day for Texas BJJ with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation bring the 2013 IBJJF Dallas International Open to the TWU – Kitty Magee Arena in Denton on Sunday, May 5th.

As seen on our recap of last year’s event, the 2013 IBJJF Dallas Open should bring in scores of competitors with grapplers headed in from all over the country to come and compete in DFW. Nova União took the team titles in both the kids and adult divisions last year but they should face some stiff competition this time around.

As for individual competitors, registration and still ongoing some notables have already signed up.

Some black belt names already registered include Renato Tavares, Luis Rubalcava, Fabiana Borges, Thaysa Silva, Gabriel Vella, Marcus Antelante and Carlos Diego Ferreira.

The list continues on the lower belts as well with Rehab Muttalib, Hunter Ewald, Pedro Migliano, Cooper Cardinale, Brandon Russell, Travis Orr, and a host of others already registered.

Registration for the 2013 Dallas Open is ongoing until this Saturday. You can find all the necessary info and register to compete at the 2013 Dallas Open here.

By Felix Rodriguez, Staff Writer

In this edition of TXMMA’s Technique of the Week we feature Gracie Barra Black Belt, Alexandre “Dande” Santos.

Professor Dande is a second-degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. and has been one of the most respected instructors at Marcio Feitosa’s Gracie Barra –South Austin since 2011. Dande’s calm and easy-going demeanor have served him well on the mats as an instructor and while competing as well. Professor Santos remains active in the BJJ tournament scene guiding his students and competing along with them. Dande took home a bronze at the IBJJF’s Master Senior Worlds in 2012 and most recently placed second at the 2013 Houston Open while competing in the Masters black belt division.

Prof. Dande is an important part of Gracie Barra’s strong nucleus of instructors. When Roberto Tussa Alcenar sustained a back injury Dande drove from Austin to Houston in order to help his friend and teammate honor a seminar commitment. TXMMA covered the guard-passing seminar at Gracie Barra West Chase and we already showed Prof. Ulpiano Malachias’ arm lock from the turtle Technique of the Week that TXMMA shot at that event.

In this edition of our Technique of the Week Prof. Dande demonstrates how to counter an opponent’s deep half-guard by submitting them with a choke. The deep half guard is most effective when the opponent’s leg is fully controlled to create leverage. Wait for the opponent to commit to attacking the leg to begin setting up the submission by grabbing the far side lapel with the arm closest to your opponent’s legs and threading their gi under the free arm. Bring the tip of the lapel to the opposite side of the body by switching the grip “knuckles down” and feeding it underneath the opponent’s head. The key to making the choke work is the proper placement of the lapel to pressure the opponent into leaving their neck vulnerable for the Ezekiel choke. Finish the submission by holding the lapel firmly while bringing the elbow down across the top of the neck, slide the arm closest to the oppnent’s head underneath their neck and reach for the sleeve of your other arm. Once your grip is secure the Ezekial choke will be ready to go. As always practice the techniques shown here with safety and respect for your training partner

Professor Ulpiano Malachias is a second-degree black belt under Carlinhos Gracie and the head instructor at Gracie Barra Westchase in Houston, TX. Malachias is an avid competitor that has placed in high-level competitions throughout the world, including a bronze medal at World Nogi in 2008. Though now focused on instruction, Malachias still likes to lead his students by example and most recently competed at this year’s IBJJF Houston Open where he took gold in the black belt master division as a heavyweight. When not representing the GB banner himself Prof. Ulpiano can be seen alongside Vinicius Draculinho Magalhaes and other GB stalwarts coaching their team’s vast stable of athletes in tournaments throughout the state of Texas.

In this TXMMA Technique of the Week, Malachias shows our readers his fresh perspective on jiu-jitsu by demonstrating a slick arm lock from the turtle position. This submission can be executed with or without relying on the gi by replacing the deep collar control for a seatbelt (over/ underhook) grip. The key to setting up this submission is isolating the arm being attacked once top control has been established on the turtled opponent. To trap and leave the targeted arm defenseless use your knee to block the opponent from grabbing at their own leg to block by sliding yourself forward and to the side. Trap the isolated arm by grabbing it and triangling it with your legs and threaten with a lapel choke to set up the submission. When the opponent attempts to protect their neck they will leave an opening for you to roll them into position by controlling their head with your far arm in a half-nelson position. The natural movement of the body will roll your opponent in a way that will allow for you to also isolate the other arm with your own and leaving the arm trapped with your legs ready for attack. Hyperextend the arm by controlling your opponent and placing pressure on their elbow. Put your weight on the joint by sitting and squeezing your legs as you pull back and wait for the tap.

The owner and head instructor for Gold Team MMA and Fitness in Sugar Land, TX, Macaco is a former Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and most recently defended his MMA title just last Friday via second round submission over Longview, TX native Derrick Krantz.

In this TXMMA Technique of the Week, Macaco shows our readers to transition from a butterfly sweep into a calf slicer. As you’ll see in the video, the key to getting the calf slicer set up properly is getting a good underhook and making the opponent commit their weight forward when posting their arms to counter the butterfly sweep. The space created by the underhook and sweeping foot allowed Macaco to spin under his opponent and isolate the ankle of the leg he tried sweeping in order to set up the calf-slicer.

Enjoy and, as always, please be careful with your training partners when you try this out!
