EFC 1 to Feature Roy Spoon Taking on Marcus Hicks; Prominent DFW BJJ Leader Also Appearing on the Card?

DALLAS, TX, November 9, 2011 – An exciting matchup for the DFW Metroplex has been announced for early next year in the Element Fighting Championship, a new promotion set to debut on January 14th. Set for the Plano Convention Centre, EFC1 will feature non-other than the founder of the Dallas Jawbreakers, Roy Spoon taking on WEC-veteran Marcus “The Wrecking Ball” Hicks.

For the latter, this will mark a return to the cage for the first time in nearly a year. Marcus last made an appearance at SWC 10, dispatching Anthony Macias by armbar in the first round in Frisco. Since then, he’s been spending much of his time refereeing and competing in grappling tournaments around the state. Now with MMA calling his name once again, he’s looking to get back to the form that saw him go undefeated in his first nine bouts as he makes his way back to the big leagues.

Standing in his way will be 29 year old Roy Spoon, an up-and-coming fighter in his own right with 2011 wins over Brandon Smith, who was undefeated heading into their matchup at XKO 10, and a subsequent TKO victory over the aforementioned Anthony Macias. The year’s not over yet for Spoon as he still have Longview’s Josh Lee to contend with on December 3rd at XKO 13 but in speaking with him recently, this matchup with Hicks is clearly on his mind.

“I’m fighting Josh Lee on December 3rd and I plan on staying unbeaten this year but I’m also very excited about the fight with Hicks. Roy mentioned to TXMMA.com. “I can’t wait for January 14th to get here so I can show up and collect what I been working my ass off for the last five years.”

Looking at this matchup subjectively, it should be a very interesting tussle as both men are known to possess a lot of power in their fists and are unequivocally known as finishers. To illustrate this, its important to note that out of 16 fights between them, only 1 has gone to decision. Whichever way it shakes out, chances are good that this main event won’t make to the final bell.

As for the rest of the card shaping up for EFC1, notable fighters set to compete on the card include Clay Hantz  (7-3) who’ll be taking on Brandon Farran (5-4) in the co-main event of the evening along with other young prospects like Faez Miraki, Eli Tamez, and Matt Hobar also set to compete. Rumor has it that the promotion is also working on several other bouts as we speak, including a fight potentially featuring Nova União’s Texas leader Bruno Bastos making his first appearance in the cage since facing UFC star Rousimar “Tonquinho” Palhares in Florianopolis, Brazil way back in 2006. We’ll get to get confirmation on that as it comes but here’s the current fight card as it appears now.
