Opinions: Banned Substance – Why Weed Can Cause Unfair Advantages in MMA

SAN ANTONIO, TX, February 20, 2012 – When you think of the typical pot smoker Hollywood has created certain types: Cheech and Chong, Jay and Silent Bob, and Slow Poke Rodriguez; not what you would consider modern day athletes… But, what about names like Nick Diaz, Michael Phelps, Ricky Williams, or even Josh Howard; athletes who have to be in top peak physical condition and not the vegetative state that we are used to seeing portrayed in the media. Sure marijuana can have those types of effects on people, but there are certain benefits athletes can get by using marijuana.

Certain types of hydroponics have shown to help athletes in certain areas of their sport. One of the effects of marijuana can cause is peripheral vision, to get a better view of you surroundings. Great for point guards in the NBA who can see all around the court, why you think the Players Union fought with the league to not drug test for marijuana.

In MMA, marijuana has effects that can improve fighter’s abilities in many ways; one way pot can help fighters is by calming down their nerves. When a fighter fights there are certain nerves and anxiety’s that any person can go threw, those nerves can either bring you up or bring you down. It’s all part of the fight game, both fighters should have to deal with their nerves naturally. If one fighter uses a substance to numb his fears and butterflies in the stomach, it is a form of cheating.

Some types of marijuana have what some people call the “freeze time” effect, where time seems to slow down. What an advantage a fighter can have to see opponent’s movements, someone who can see what’s coming towards him can be ready for anything. If this was a steroid that can do this, everyone would be calling for the ban of it.

Weed also acts like a muscle relaxer, to which your body can loosen up and make your body able to move and take shots. When your muscles are relaxed you can sometimes feel nothing, so imagine taking numerous punches to the body and face. To take a fighters best hit and walk through them like a zombie on the Walking Dead is a hell of an advantage.

Now, I am for the legalization of marijuana for medical use, but not when it comes to sports. Is it fair to use in sports is the question, not if it should be legalized. When it comes to an athlete’s performance, they should be held to a higher standard of playing by the rules.

Ban it or don’t ; but I Think it’s very apparent why the NBAPU doesn’t want to be tested for it and it’s not because point guards are using it to enhance their court vision; I also am in dis belief that these athletes ;although failed for thc, we’re actually high during their performance good read but there’s my position – getting high just doesn’t seem like a smart professional move so I don’t get it. Plus who the hell wants the munchies while cutting weight?

Excellent read.  However, I’m curious as to how a “freez time” effect would help a fighter?  Unless time literally slows down because your high, then odds are your going to get popped in the face and not even realize it till way late.  I would also challenge the claim that it helps calm the nerves.  Maybe for some people, but the majority of people get a little more paranoid and even possibly increased anxiety when smoking bud.  Tons of MMA/BJJ guys toke up, usually after workouts to relax the muscles, mind, and even get to sleep.  And thats as “performance boosting” as it gets.  Excellent for recovery, not so much for focus or anything else during a competition.  As long as a competitor isnt literally high DURINGcompetition then it shouldnt even be a issue.

Hmm herbs tend to create anxiety not calm them. If anything it’ll get u in a ehh eff it attitude but not calm.

  • Ricdeldan

Oh and that’s a beautiful picture.

I completely diasgre!, No science behind those claims, I can see the “feeling that time is slowing down” yet we all know it doesnt… it doesnt improve your reaction speed or give you a “heightened awareness” anymore than a preworkout drink would. Anyways good article though appreciate the read by all means, just have my own opinions!

Good article. You made some good points. It is true that marijuana affects people differently, and for some may help performance, but for the majority I think it would be more harmful than helpful. It does slow down your reaction time, which would not be very helpful in a fight. I do agree that if you are going to be a professional you should not be doing any type of drugs, enhancing or not. If your going to be a professional you should act like one. I’m not saying you shouldn’t smoke pot, just don’t do it if your training to fight, or perform in any type of sport.

This is all horseshit.  The only actual effect that would benefit an MMA fighter is the fact cannabis helps with pain(proven!) and would help with relaxing (but not in the ring!) which could benefit as far as recovery goes.  BOTH of those effects are available in the form of MUCH more dangerous pharmaceuticals (e.g pain killers and muscle relaxers and benzo’s(valium, ativan, etc)).

Time slows down – I wish.  Peripheral vision is DISTORTED by cannabis usage.

I want to thank you all for reading the article I did a lot of studing on this subject, all legal, and this was some of the things I found in medical journals. I also went off interviews with Nick Diaz, Joe Rogan, and Eddie Bravo who have talked openly about the subject matter. The one thing I wished I did was make note the it’s not all weed, but different types of hybrids that can cause these effects.

I got to be honest, this article has no evidence provided about the “advantanges provided by using marijuana.”  It might be a good idea to back up such claims before writing an article like this.
